Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah on Tuesday, January 7, alleged that certain groups are working to undermine Kenya’s democracy.
Omtatah gained national attention in late 2024 after joining peaceful protests in Nairobi against a wave of abductions that had gripped the country since December.
Following his arrest and subsequent release on bond, the outspoken Senator, known for his criticism of the Kenya Kwanza government, appeared on a radio show to share his views on the alarming trend of abductions.
He argued that the kidnappings were intended to intimidate Kenyans, particularly the youth, who are actively advocating for better governance.

“Public office is no longer about service but about theft,” Omtatah remarked. “These abductions are designed to bypass the law and instill fear in young people who are demanding accountability.”
Without mentioning names, he suggested that efforts were underway to erode Kenya’s democratic foundation.

“I believe someone is attempting to dismantle the republic as we know it. That’s why you’re witnessing the gradual breakdown of republican principles and institutions,” he stated.
During the same interview, Omtatah disclosed that following his arrest on December 30, he had been barred from accessing state offices, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
He recounted an instance where he was turned away from the DCI headquarters while trying to assist a Kenyan in need.
“I’ve been informed that orders have been issued preventing me from entering any government institution. If this can happen to a senator, what about ordinary citizens?” he questioned.
As public pressure mounted on the government to address the abductions, several missing Kenyans resurfaced on Monday and reunited with their families.
Among them was renowned cartoonist Gideon Kibet, popularly known as Kibet Bull, who disclosed that he was abandoned in Luanda, Vihiga County. However, Kibet did not provide details about his experience.
The families of Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, and Rony Kiplangat also confirmed they had reconnected with their loved ones.
