KHRC calls for the resignation of Kindiki, Ichung’wah, and Murkomen over abduction cases.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has called for the resignation of seven senior state officials over their controversial remarks regarding abductions. In a statement, KHRC specifically named Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, Sirisia MP John Waluke, and Tiaty MP William Kamket. The commission criticized their statements, made during a period of heightened public concern over enforced abductions.

Additionally, KHRC has demanded the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja, accusing him of failing to prevent these abductions. The commission urged a thorough and impartial investigation into the officials’ remarks and any potential involvement in abductions or extrajudicial killings of government critics. KHRC emphasized that those found guilty should face prosecution and be permanently disqualified from holding public office.

The commission argued that the politicians’ comments undermined the rule of law and violated the ethical responsibilities of their leadership roles. Among the cited remarks, KHRC condemned Kindiki for previously defending excessive police force against unarmed protesters during his tenure as Interior CS, which it claimed set a dangerous precedent in the current administration.

National Assembly Majority Leader Ichung’wah was criticized for his remarks targeting Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya. During the funeral of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s mother, Ichung’wah accused Natembeya of overseeing abductions and extrajudicial killings during his time as Rift Valley Regional Commissioner.

“When you killed people and dumped them in River Yala, you were the Regional Commissioner responsible for abductions and murders. Shame on you, Governor! You cannot lecture this government about abductions when you were the chief perpetrator under the previous regime,” Ichung’wah said.

Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi also faced backlash for endorsing punitive actions against individuals who shared AI-generated images of President William Ruto. Sudi claimed he could have dealt with the content creators in three days if he were Interior CS. Similar sentiments were echoed by Senate Speaker Kingi, who attributed the issue to poor parental guidance and warned of government action against such individuals.

Tiaty MP Kamket was also reprimanded for his comments labeling the youth who shared the AI images as “lazy bones” and threatening severe consequences against them.

The KHRC report highlighted concerns over Ruto’s administration, which has been accused of orchestrating abductions targeting critics of its policies. In the past month alone, six youths were reported abducted, with five later released under mysterious circumstances, despite IG Kanja’s earlier denial of police involvement.
