Three Arrested in Mombasa as Protests Against Abductions Erupt

Three individuals were reportedly arrested by anti-riot police officers while protesting outside Mombasa Technical University (TUK).

Confirming the incident on Monday, human rights activist Hussein Khalid stated that the trio was detained for allegedly demonstrating against the recent wave of forced disappearances in the country.

Videos shared by Khalid showed police officers confronting protesters holding placards before apprehending and loading them into a police vehicle.

During the scuffle, one protester was heard questioning the officers about the reason for his arrest. However, the officers ignored his inquiries and continued with the arrests.

Khalid condemned the incident and demanded the immediate release of the detained protesters, emphasizing that the police had been notified about the demonstrations beforehand.

“At least three people have been arrested outside Mombasa Technical University. We demand their immediate release. The police were informed about the protests and acknowledged the notification,” Khalid remarked.

Prior to the arrests, a heavy police presence was observed patrolling Mombasa streets to prevent protests.

Following the arrests, activists in Mombasa vowed to continue demonstrating until all those abducted in recent weeks are released. They accused the police of interfering with their constitutional right to peaceful protests despite having obtained prior approval.

“The police have shown up in large numbers to stop us, but we have a constitutional right to protest. We will continue demonstrating until all abducted individuals are freed,” said one protester.

A similar protest occurred in Nairobi, where activists launched peaceful demonstrations against abductions. Footage showed women dressed in sackcloth marching through the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
