Rebel forces, supported by Rwanda, have taken control of the town of Masisi in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This marks the second town seized by the M23 group in just two days in North Kivu province.
Since 2021, the M23 rebels have gained control over large areas of eastern DR Congo, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.
Angola has been leading mediation efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict, with negotiations between Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame. However, those talks collapsed last month, leaving the region in continued turmoil.
The Congolese government has yet to comment on the loss of Masisi. Located about 80 km (50 miles) north of the provincial capital Goma, Masisi has a population of around 40,000. The M23 group briefly occupied Goma in 2012.
