Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji Condemns Billy Mwangi’s Ordeal, Vows Legislative Action
Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has recounted the harrowing experiences of Billy Mwangi during his abduction. The MP, who led efforts to secure Billy’s release, shared disturbing details about the mistreatment Billy endured.
Speaking on Monday, shortly after reuniting with Billy’s family, Mukunji revealed that initial reports indicate Billy was subjected to whipping, confinement in darkness, and food deprivation.
“The young man is severely traumatized,” said Mukunji. “He was whipped and locked in a dark room. While we were enjoying the Christmas holidays, he was confined in an unknown location.” He added, “Billy was only given one meal a day, deliberately portioned to render him helpless.”
The legislator condemned the abduction and pledged to advocate for stronger laws to protect Kenyans from such incidents. “We must amend our laws to ensure that if such things happen, the government acts swiftly because when one of us suffers, we all suffer,” Mukunji declared.
He called for an end to such ordeals, saying, “Let Billy be the last person to endure this. Let his parents be the last to face such anguish.”
Mukunji affirmed his commitment to fighting abduction and resisting fear tactics aimed at silencing dissent. “Billy has not been charged with any offense, which makes it clear that this was an attempt to instill fear. But we stand stronger and more determined,” he stated.
The MP criticized lawlessness, government overreach, and disregard for the rule of law, pledging to continue the fight with unwavering resolve. “We, as leaders with a conscience, will not back down.”
Billy Mwangi was abducted on December 21, 2024, and returned home after 16 days. According to his father, Gerald Karicha, Billy arrived at their Embu home at around 8 a.m. on Monday.
“He came home on his own,” said Karicha. “His mother and I were outside when we saw him. We thank God and everyone who prayed and supported us during this time.”
Billy was among six youths abducted after posting criticisms of President William Ruto and the government on social media. Three others—Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, and Rony Kiplangat—were also released on Monday.
Meanwhile, the family of Gideon Kibet, alias Kibet Bull, reported they have not heard from him since his abduction on December 24, 2024.
Despite the trauma, Rony Kiplangat has been reunited with his family, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the ongoing calls for justice and accountability.
