Health Permanent Secretary Mary Muthoni has cautioned Kenyans to avoid the Makuku sub-location in Makueni, where a foreign object fell from the sky on December 30.
In an official statement released on Saturday, January 4, Muthoni stated that preliminary investigations indicated no immediate threat to public health. However, she advised residents to steer clear of the area, avoid approaching the object, and refrain from handling any unfamiliar materials.
“The Ministry of Health advises the public to keep away from the site and avoid contact with unknown substances,” the PS announced.
She further urged the community to remain vigilant and report any health concerns or unusual environmental changes to local health authorities.
A metallic ring, approximately 2.5 meters in diameter and weighing about 500 kilograms, fell in Mukuku village on December 30. Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang before discovering the object.
Although no injuries were reported, the incident has raised questions about the object’s origin and potential environmental and health impacts.

The Kenya Space Agency confirmed that the object was debris from a space structure. In response, the Ministry of Health has issued protocols for handling similar cases, including medical measures for possible exposure to hazardous substances.
To address public concerns, the Ministry is collaborating with health promoters and local officials to improve risk communication.
Photos circulated on social media showed residents handling the object with bare hands, unaware of potential dangers. As a precaution, mental health and psychological support have been provided to the affected residents.
In preparation for similar incidents, the Ministry is developing a policy framework to manage chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear hazards.
PS Muthoni reassured the public of the government’s commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of all Kenyans.
