Martin Otieno, a suspect tied to a series of robberies targeting motorists on Nairobi’s Southern Bypass, has been arrested.
The arrest came after intensified patrols by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Lang’ata, Dagoretti, and the Regional Criminal Investigations Office, addressing growing security concerns in the area.
Otieno was reportedly caught after attempting to rob a family using a large stone to obstruct the road, forcing their vehicle to stop. “The suspect’s tactic involved placing a massive stone on the road to create a traffic hazard, enabling him to strike. Officers on patrol were alerted by a loud crash,” stated the DCI in a press release.
Upon responding, officers found a Volkswagen, registration KYW 690, had struck the stone while traveling toward Ngong Road. The family inside the vehicle described their harrowing experience: after hitting the obstruction, the suspect emerged from nearby bushes and robbed them of their belongings.
Acting swiftly, patrolling officers chased the suspect into a thicket and successfully apprehended him. Otieno is now in police custody and is set to appear in court on Monday, January 6, 2025.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to enhancing security along the Southern Bypass and advised motorists to stay alert.
