In a joint operation with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), police apprehended a suspect believed to be part of a carjacking syndicate targeting motorists along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass. The arrest occurred on Friday, January 3, following a surge in robbery cases during the holiday season.
The sting operation was led by the Regional Criminal Investigations Officer, supported by officers from Lang’ata and Dagoretti Police Stations. Their intensified patrols in the area resulted in the swift arrest of a suspect who attempted to rob drivers on Thursday, January 2, along the busy stretch between Ole Sereni and Kikuyu.
Reports of rising mugging incidents along the bypass, especially in the evenings, had prompted public outcry. According to the DCI, the suspect’s method involved placing a large stone on the road to force cars to stop, creating an opportunity to ambush motorists with crude weapons and steal their valuables.
“The suspect used a massive stone to block traffic, staging accidents to facilitate his attacks,” the DCI revealed.

On the night of the arrest, officers on patrol were drawn to the scene by a loud crash, where a car had hit the stone while heading toward Ngong Road. Occupants of the vehicle described a harrowing ordeal in which the suspect emerged from a nearby thicket, confronted them, and robbed them before fleeing.
Acting swiftly, officers pursued the suspect into the thicket, ultimately arresting him.
The suspect remains in police custody and is set to be arraigned in court on Monday, January 6, 2025.
