Liverpool is set to add to the woes of struggling Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim acknowledges that Manchester United is facing a relegation battle, and the struggling manager will receive little sympathy from the in-form Premier League leaders, Liverpool. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s hopes of salvaging a poor season hinge on Erling Haaland rediscovering his prolific form, and Chris Wood has emerged as the key figure in Nottingham Forest’s surprising push for a top-four finish.

Here are three key talking points ahead of this weekend’s action:

Manchester United’s Struggles and Survival Concerns

Amorim’s admission that Manchester United should be worried about relegation highlights the significant challenges he faces ahead of a tough matchup with Liverpool on Sunday. United currently sits in 14th place, just seven points above the relegation zone, following a disappointing 2-0 home loss to Newcastle on Monday.

Since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November, Amorim has struggled to halt United’s alarming decline. The team finished 2024 with five league losses in a month for the first time since 1962 and heads into the Liverpool match on a four-game losing streak across all competitions, with six defeats in their last eight games. With Liverpool six points clear at the top after a dominant run of 23 wins in 27 games, United fans are understandably concerned about a repeat of their 7-0 thrashing at Anfield in 2023.

Amorim remains hopeful, stating, “I know it will take a lot of hard work from everyone to get there, but I am very excited about where we can go together in 2025.” However, he admitted it has been difficult to implement his preferred 3-4-3 system, acknowledging that adapting to it has not been easy.

Haaland Ready for City’s Revival

Erling Haaland believes Manchester City will benefit from their rare six-day break as the new father returns to action against West Ham on Saturday. After a disappointing collapse in their title defense, City managed to end a five-game winless run with a 2-0 victory over Leicester, though they remain six points behind the top four.

Haaland, who has only scored twice in his last eight appearances, ended a four-game goal drought in the win against Leicester, and he is optimistic about City’s chances moving forward. “It’s always a relief to score. It’s been a difficult time,” Haaland said, expressing confidence that Pep Guardiola’s side can turn their fortunes around in 2025.

Chris Wood Powers Forest’s Champions League Push

Chris Wood is thriving as the key player for Nottingham Forest in their surprise bid to qualify for the Champions League. With 11 goals in the league this season, the New Zealand striker has been instrumental in Forest’s success. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo has built the team’s strategy around Wood’s play, and the 33-year-old has netted 22 goals in his last 34 league appearances.

Thanks to Wood’s impressive performances, third-placed Forest are pushing for a Champions League spot for the first time since 1981. Wood credited the team’s success to their ability to create chances, saying, “The team’s just doing extremely well, finding chances and luckily they’re going in the back of the net.”
