Ichung’wah and Natembeya engage in heated exchange over abductions.

The burial of the late Mama Anne Nanyama, mother to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, was overshadowed by a heated exchange between leaders over rising cases of abductions and extra-judicial killings in the country.

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah clashed with Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, sharply criticizing him for his comments on abductions. Ichung’wah accused Natembeya of failing to share actionable intelligence with the police and rebuked him for publicly opposing remarks by COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli.

“You are an officer. If you know people are being abducted, share the information with the police, but don’t come here to shout at Atwoli,” Ichung’wah stated. He also reminded Natembeya of his tenure as a regional commissioner during the previous administration, which faced similar accusations of abductions and extra-judicial killings.

Ichung’wah later apologized to mourners and the bereaved family for his outburst.

The funeral, attended by President William Ruto, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, COTU boss Francis Atwoli, and several governors, MPs, and senators, became a platform for intense debate.

In his speech, Atwoli urged parents to teach their children respect and warned against the misuse of social media. He also alleged that some individuals falsely claim abductions to gain financial support from civil society organizations.

Governor Natembeya, in his address, condemned suggestions that victims of abductions were fabricating their experiences. “I say this with a heavy heart: for a leader to claim people are abducting and killing themselves is deeply unfortunate and inappropriate for this solemn occasion. Our children are being lost and killed, and that is the truth,” he said.

In response, Ichung’wah defended Atwoli, asserting that as an elder, his remarks carried credibility. “Do not think that because you are governor, you can bully others here. I’ve seen you attack Wetang’ula in other funerals. Respect others, and we will respect you,” Ichung’wah said as he introduced the next speaker.
