Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has openly criticized the National Intelligence Service (NIS), alleging that its agents are being misused to monitor his activities.
In a statement on Thursday, December 19, 2024, Gachagua accused an NIS officer of trailing him from Nairobi to Makueni County during a visit to Kalawa Ward in Mbooni Constituency. He supported his claims by sharing photos of the vehicle and the officer allegedly involved, decrying what he termed a waste of public resources.
“National Intelligence Service, please deploy this vehicle and this officer to meaningful tasks that enhance our national security,” Gachagua urged. “It was unnecessary to waste fuel and man-hours following me all the way from Nairobi to Makueni yesterday.”
This criticism is part of an ongoing pattern. In October 2024, Gachagua publicly censured NIS Director General Noordin Haji, defending his stance as an effort to ensure accountability within public institutions. He argued that robust scrutiny is vital for the effective operation of national security agencies.
Earlier in June 2024, Gachagua called for Haji’s resignation, accusing him of failing to provide adequate intelligence to prevent unrest after the proposed Finance Bill 2024. He claimed the NIS’ lapses contributed to the widespread chaos and loss of life during the ensuing protests.
