The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans to prepare for occasional rainfall from December 18 to December 25, with varying weather conditions expected across different regions.
David Gikungu, the Director General of the Kenya Meteorological Department, announced on Wednesday, December 18, that the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central and South Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Coast will experience rain.
The counties in the East Highlands—Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi—are forecasted to receive moderate to heavy rainfall. The rain will likely start in the afternoon, following a mix of sunny and cloudy weather in the morning, and will continue until evening.
Counties including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, and Nakuru are expected to receive heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms, with residents advised to watch out for potential flooding.
Other counties, such as Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot, are also likely to experience similar weather patterns. Coastal counties like Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and parts of Tana River will see moderate rainfall.
The department also issued a temperature advisory, warning of very cold nights in the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi, where temperatures could drop to 7°C in the first three days of the forecast before rising to 11°C.
Residents of counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, and Uasin Gishu are also cautioned to expect high daytime temperatures reaching up to 36°C. Other areas including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale should prepare for hot weather.
