From Struggles to Breakthrough: The Journey of Kimani Mbugua

Former television host Kimani Mbugua was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2020, after having co-hosted The Trend on NTV alongside Larry Madowo and later hosted a show on Citizen TV. Despite his promising career in journalism, his followers were shocked by his rapid decline.

Raised in a Christian home, Kimani’s erratic behavior appeared out of character, as his father later explained. Earlier this year, a TikTok video of him went viral, showing him in an agitated state, threatening to use a gun on anyone who owed him money unless they paid up. The video raised concerns among Kenyans on social media, highlighting his unstable condition.

Having struggled with mental health issues for a while, his situation seemed to worsen, leading his family and media personalities to step in. In an interview with Oga Obinna, Kimani’s father claimed that his friends might have worsened his condition by spiking his drink. He shared how Kimani’s sister discovered disturbing photos and videos on his phone from a party where he had been drinking, vomiting, and possibly being mistreated. “She said she saw a white substance in his glass,” his father said.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko offered his support and helped Kimani enter a rehabilitation center in Mombasa, marking the start of his recovery. Throughout his treatment, Kimani received immense support and prayers from his fans, which he credits for his healing. He expressed deep gratitude for those who stood by him during his darkest moments.

While in rehab, a video of Kimani singing Sauti Sol’s Feel My Love went viral, showing his renewed spirit. In the video, he also called for his release, stating that he was on the road to recovery. Kimani frequently thanked God for helping him rebuild his life.

Now fully recovered and revitalized, Kimani recently opened up about his journey in an interview with Oga Obinna. Reflecting on his time in rehab, he shared, “God gives you beautiful things, but if you take them for granted, He can take them away.” He admitted that he had taken his talent for granted in the past. Having also been an atheist, Kimani now appreciates the presence of a higher power. “Six months clean, and now I am not just counting those six months. Today is day one of freedom and sobriety,” he said with a renewed sense of purpose.
