Kenyans will begin moving into new homes under the affordable housing program starting January 2025, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced.
Speaking on Wednesday after a meeting with Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome and Principal Secretary Nixon Korir, Kindiki revealed that several housing projects will be ready for commissioning and occupation by early next year.
“Starting January 2025, some of the housing projects will be ready for commissioning, allocation, and occupation by new homeowners,” Kindiki stated.
The DP highlighted that 550,000 Kenyans have registered for the Boma Yangu initiative, designed to help citizens achieve homeownership. He assured that the government is working diligently to meet the housing demand reflected by these registrations.
“Currently, the national annual demand for housing is 250,000 units, yet only 50,000 units are produced annually. To bridge this gap, the government is implementing the affordable housing program, which includes social housing for low-income earners,” he added.
The project is also expected to create over 200,000 jobs in the coming year.
“With 100 housing projects underway across 45 counties, generating 135,515 units, the initiative is creating job opportunities for over 200,000 people as part of the government’s employment strategy,” Kindiki assured.
He praised the impact of the program, noting it has generated over Ksh4 billion worth of work for the Jua Kali sector and boosted the manufacturing of cement, steel, and other construction materials.
The meeting was attended by MSME Principal Secretary Susan Mang’eni and other senior government officials.
This announcement follows a report by Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy head Dennis Itumbi, who revealed that over 1,200 affordable housing units have been completed since September 2024.
Itumbi also emphasized that the program aims to increase mortgages in Kenya from 30,000 to one million, significantly enhancing homeownership and housing accessibility for more Kenyans.
