Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed his desire to keep Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford despite the forward hinting at a potential departure in search of a “new challenge.”
Rashford, 27, a product of United’s youth system, has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances since debuting in 2016. However, his recent form has dipped, with struggles over the past 18 months leading to his omission from England’s Euro squad last summer.
Amorim’s decision to leave Rashford out of the Manchester derby lineup last weekend added to speculation, which was fueled further by Rashford’s interview with British journalist Henry Winter. In the social media interview, Rashford suggested he might end his 20-year association with the club.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday ahead of United’s League Cup quarter-final clash with Tottenham, Amorim revealed he hadn’t yet spoken to Rashford. “No, not yet,” he said. “Yesterday was a day off for the players. He’s still our player and ready for the next game.”
When asked if he wanted Rashford to stay, Amorim affirmed: “Of course. A club of this stature needs top talents, and Marcus is one of them. He just needs to perform at his best, and my focus is to help him do that.”
Amorim also suggested that the “new challenge” Rashford referred to could be found within the club, as United face the daunting task of climbing back to the top from their current position of 13th in the Premier League.
“We already have a new challenge here,” Amorim said. “It’s a tough one, but this is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and restoring its fortunes is the greatest challenge in football. I hope all my players, including Marcus, are ready to embrace it.”
