Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that the Affordable Housing Programme has generated over Ksh.4 billion worth of opportunities for the Jua Kali sector, significantly boosting the local construction materials industry.
Speaking during a status and appraisal briefing on the Affordable Housing Programme at his official residence in Karen, Kindiki highlighted that the initiative is currently underway in at least 45 counties, providing employment to more than 200,000 Kenyans.
“Across 45 counties, 100 housing projects are at various stages of completion, delivering 135,515 units and creating job opportunities for over 200,000 individuals as part of the Government’s job creation strategy,” he said.
He further emphasized that these ongoing projects have spurred growth in the manufacture of essential construction materials, including cement and steel, while providing substantial work for the Jua Kali sector.
Kindiki reiterated the government’s commitment to making decent, safe, and affordable housing accessible to all Kenyans. He noted that the national housing demand far exceeds the current supply, with an annual need for 250,000 housing units compared to a market output of only 50,000 units.
To address this gap, the Kenya Kwanza administration has prioritized the Affordable Housing Programme, including social housing initiatives designed to support low-income earners.
“From January 2025, some housing units will be ready for commissioning, allocation, and occupation by new homeowners,” Kindiki stated, adding that approximately 550,000 Kenyans have already registered for home ownership through the Boma Yangu platform.
The briefing was attended by Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Principal Secretaries Nixon Korir (Lands), Susan Mang’eni (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development), and other senior government officials.
