Dogs of all shapes and sizes paraded the catwalk, showcasing their fancy dress costumes at the sixth edition of the Lagos Dog Carnival.
The venue buzzed with excitement as various breeds from across the country strutted along the red carpet in colorful costumes, wings, and accessories.
Some dog owners lined up to have their pets blessed with holy water by Catholic priest Reverend Father Michael Chike-Osamor.
“I know it might seem unusual, even controversial to some, to bless pets, but in my church, we believe that animals are part of God’s creation and plan for humanity. They are not just for food, but companions who offer warmth and presence. When I was invited to bless the dogs, I was eager to do so,” explained Father Michael Chike-Osamor.
For the dog owners, the carnival was a chance to socialize and connect with fellow dog lovers.
“We need events like this more often, not just at the end of the year. It’s crucial for building bonds and a sense of community among dog lovers,” said Blessing Chukwuma.
The theme of this year’s carnival, ‘Angels on Paw,’ inspired many dogs to wear angel wings in celebration.
Jackie Idimogu, the carnival organizer, explained the event’s purpose: “In the past, people kept pets at home and spent money on them without recognition. Today, we celebrate these dogs and their owners for the love and care they give all year long. They may not be able to say thank you, but we are here to express our gratitude on their behalf.”
Though the number of participants was lower than in previous years, Idimogu is encouraged by the growing awareness of proper pet care in Nigeria.
“I want Nigeria to be recognized globally as a dog-friendly country,” said Idimogu. “Africa and pet owners here often aren’t seen in the same light as pet lovers in the West, but we’re changing that. We want the world to know that in Nigeria, and across Africa, we cherish our dogs and pets. We adore them and will do anything for them. We’re here today to show the world that we celebrate our pets, now and always.”
