Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that retired security officers have volunteered to guard his homes and provide personal security. Speaking on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi show on Sunday, Gachagua alleged that his official security detail has been withdrawn since the consecration and installation of Bishop Peter Kimani Ndung’u in Embu County on November 16, 2024.
Gachagua said that following his impeachment, he was assigned six security officers—four stationed at his residence and two serving as private security. However, he now relies on retired officers, including former Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Kenya Forest Service (KFS) personnel, who have stepped in to protect him. “These retired officers volunteered to guard my homes. They saw what I went through, and above all, God is watching over us. He is the head of all security forces,” he remarked.
The former deputy president further alleged that an incident during a funeral in Limuru, Kiambu County, on November 28 was a planned attempt on his life. He recounted how armed assailants disrupted the event, attacking attendees and pelting his car with stones.
“In Limuru, I had no security—it was God who protected me. The plan was to assassinate me. A group of young men, speaking in Kikuyu, were looking for me and dismantling the tent poles, shouting gutha mutwe (hit the head),” he claimed.
Gachagua described how the attackers targeted his car but credited four young men with shielding him from harm. “They lay on top of me, ensuring no stone or pole hit me, but one of them sustained injuries and is currently hospitalized,” he said.
The former deputy president believes these incidents are politically motivated, citing his outspoken criticism of President William Ruto’s administration and his public engagements since leaving office. Despite the threats, Gachagua says he continues to live in fear for his safety.
