Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) arrested a 27-year-old woman at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday, December 12, as she attempted to traffic drugs to Doha, Qatar.
During routine luggage screening in collaboration with Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) officials, the detectives discovered suspicious packets in her belongings. Upon inspection, they uncovered 2 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa hidden within maize flour packets.
The suspect was taken to the ANU offices for further questioning. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the woman had concealed the drugs in a bid to evade detection but was thwarted by vigilant officers.
“The DCI remains steadfast in combating the sale, distribution, trafficking, and use of illegal drugs during the festive season and beyond,” stated the officers.
This is not the first drug-trafficking arrest at JKIA. In March, DCI officers apprehended a woman attempting to smuggle cocaine to Madagascar. Suspicious items were detected around her waist via a body scanner, leading to the discovery of packets of cocaine.
Further investigations revealed a broader drug-trafficking syndicate involving four other women. The initial suspect, a Ugandan national residing in Kenya, confessed to introducing the others to the trade. The arrests dismantled part of the syndicate, with a presumptive test confirming the second recovery was cocaine weighing approximately 396 grams.
