Ruto: Fake News Threatens Our Democracy.

President Ruto Warns Against Disinformation Threatening Development and Democracy

President William Ruto has urged Kenyans to remain vigilant against disinformation campaigns designed to derail development, weaken democracy, and destabilize the nation.

Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens National Monument and Museum, Ruto emphasized that perpetrators of fake news are driven by sectarian political interests, which he claimed fuel most of the opposition to his administration. He appealed to critics to prioritize truthful, fact-based discussions over misleading narratives.

“We are at a stage in social development where digital technologies can significantly amplify disinformation, magnify fake news, and distort facts beyond recognition,” said Ruto. “If we succumb to these harmful trends, we risk losing our freedom, democracy, and progress.”

Despite the challenges posed by misinformation, Ruto maintained that the government’s development agenda is yielding visible results. He highlighted the administration’s success in laying a foundation for inclusive economic transformation, moving beyond promises to actionable progress.

“We are not where we were a year ago, let alone two years ago. We have transitioned from making pledges to implementing strategies,” he stated.

Ruto cited several achievements, including reduced costs of basic food items, lower inflation rates, and improved agricultural productivity. Additionally, he noted the impact of the Taifa Care program, asserting that registered Kenyans are now receiving better services.

The President underscored the government’s focus on addressing unemployment, healthcare, and food security through strategic initiatives. He highlighted the creation of 200,000 jobs under the Affordable Housing Programme and the placement of 243,000 Kenyans in international job opportunities since September 2022.

“Job creation is at the core of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, and the results speak for themselves,” Ruto concluded.

He called on Kenyans to rally around efforts to foster development and to reject divisive, unsubstantiated claims aimed at undermining national progress.
