A 25-year-old man, Nobert Mulwo, has been arrested for faking his own kidnapping and demanding a Sh100,000 ransom from his sister. The elaborate scheme, aimed at securing his “release,” was uncovered by detectives from the DCI headquarters in an operation carried out early this morning in Kitengela township.
Mulwo was found tied with ropes around his arms and legs, his mouth gagged with a bloody bandage to appear as though he was held hostage. The setup was intended to pressure his family into sending the ransom quickly.
The case began with a report filed at Kajiado Police Station last night, alleging that Mulwo had been forced into a Toyota Probox by two men pretending to offer him a lift. Acting swiftly, detectives from the DCI Crime Research and Operations Directorate traced him to Mutuku Lodgings in Kitengela, where they “rescued” him.
However, a brief interrogation revealed that the alleged kidnapping was an extortion plot devised by Mulwo and an accomplice, identified only as Ndolo, after Mulwo lost his entire November salary to betting.
Recovered from the scene were Sh10,100 in cash, the phone used to communicate with his family, a scalpel blade, and bandages used to inflict wounds on himself to make the scheme appear convincing.
Mulwo has been handed over to DCI Kajiado for further legal action and arraignment.
