Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua revealed plans on Monday, December 9, to develop a mobile application aimed at supporting Kenyan migrant workers experiencing mistreatment abroad.
In a post shared on X, Mutua emphasized the government’s commitment to creating safe, legal, and dignified migration pathways.
“To further assist our migrant workers, we are working on an innovative mobile app designed to address distress situations for those in danger or needing assistance,” he stated. “This app will offer a direct connection to the government, ensuring prompt interventions and protection for our people.”
The app is part of a broader strategy that involves forging partnerships and bilateral agreements, which have already facilitated overseas job opportunities for thousands of Kenyans.
Speaking at the Jamhuri National Jobs Fair held at KICC, Mutua underscored that labour migration remains a voluntary choice.
“Labour migration is about empowering individuals to pursue opportunities abroad, not coercion. If you choose to work overseas, we will support you every step of the way,” he said.
This announcement comes amid criticism directed at the ministry for sending Kenyans to low-paying jobs abroad. The government has recently conducted nationwide recruitment drives for positions in Qatar, Australia, Canada, and Europe, including 500 nanny jobs in Saudi Arabia and 600 bodaboda rider jobs in the UAE.
These efforts have sparked frustration among applicants, who allege exploitation by agents charging exorbitant processing fees ranging from Ksh150,000 to Ksh180,000. Others have questioned the quality of jobs being offered.
“Riding a motorbike or bicycle is something we can do locally. The government should be creative and invest taxes in generating jobs here,” an applicant from Nakuru remarked during a recruitment event on November 26.
Mutua, however, insists that the recruitment process is free and transparent.
“We are building systems to ensure fairness and protect the welfare of our workers. Together, we can unlock new opportunities for Kenyan talent,” he affirmed.
