Two men accused of owning a gas plant that exploded in February in Embakasi were arraigned in court on Monday and charged with 11 criminal counts.
Derrick Kimathi Nyamu and Stephen Kilonzo Muite pleaded not guilty to charges of operating a bulk LPG storage facility without a valid license from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
The court heard that on February 1, 2024, at Mradi Estate in Embakasi, the two, along with an accomplice not present in court, allegedly operated the facility without the required EPRA certification. They also face 10 counts of manslaughter for the deaths of 10 people.
The accused were granted bail, set at Ksh. 1 million each, with two sureties each.
The fire, which broke out during the night on February 1, left 10 people dead and over 250 others injured.
