On Monday, December 9, President William Ruto made an unannounced visit to his former boss, Uhuru Kenyatta, at the former president’s home in Gatundu. This marks the second time in less than a month that the two leaders have met, following their initial meeting in Embu.
According to an official statement from State House, President Ruto took the opportunity to express his gratitude to Uhuru Kenyatta for ensuring a smooth transition of power after the 2022 presidential elections. He thanked his predecessor for establishing a strong foundation that supported the government’s implementation of key programs under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
During the meeting, the leaders also discussed the swift resolution of court matters, which had been a major barrier to the reconstitution of the IEBC. Additionally, they jointly urged Kenyans to support Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Chair position.
The timing of the meeting was notable, coinciding with an escalating power struggle in the Mount Kenya region and speculation surrounding a possible cabinet reshuffle, with several cabinet secretaries at risk of being replaced.
