DCI Arrests Prime Suspect in the Murder of Kirinyaga University Student ‘Akoko the Billionaire’
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday apprehended the main suspect linked to the murder of Sospeter Osunga, also known as “Akoko the Billionaire,” a Kirinyaga University student who was killed on November 18.
After extensive investigations, three individuals were initially detained and provided critical details to aid the inquiry into Osunga’s death. Acting on intelligence leads, detectives arrested the prime suspect, Brian Otieno Maurice, who is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, December 9.
“On the tragic day, Osunga was attacked in Ayani by a gang wielding sharp objects, leaving him with fatal back injuries,” the DCI reported.
The incident unfolded after a confrontation between Osunga’s group and unruly bodaboda riders. The fourth-year student’s death, officially confirmed on November 19, revealed he had been repeatedly hacked by a mob.
According to reports, Osunga, originally from Siaya County, had visited Kibera at the invitation of a friend. Accompanied by a man and a woman, he treated revelers at a local joint to drinks before heading to another venue where an Ohangla musician was performing.
The altercation erupted at the second club when comments made by Osunga angered some bodaboda riders. Amid the chaos, the woman accompanying Osunga sustained serious injuries but managed to escape. His driver also fled and later informed the police about the incident.
Known for his opulent lifestyle, Akoko frequently shared his social escapades, including nights out and road trips, on social media.
Tragically, his death occurred just two months after another Kirinyaga University student, Dennis Oduor Otieno, alias “Denno Bright,” was found dead in a Mombasa apartment following a night of partying.
