Ruud van Nistelrooy parted ways with Manchester United’s coaching staff on Monday, coinciding with the arrival of new manager Ruben Amorim at the club’s training complex to begin his tenure at Old Trafford.
Van Nistelrooy, a former star striker for United, had temporarily taken charge after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal last month. During his four-match stint, he led the team to three wins and a draw, concluding with a 3-0 victory over Leicester in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Dutchman, who had been appointed as an assistant coach in July on a two-year deal, had expressed a desire to remain at the club to work with Amorim. However, United confirmed on Monday that the 48-year-old would not be part of the new coaching setup.
A club statement read, “Manchester United can confirm that Ruud van Nistelrooy has left the club. He rejoined this summer and served as interim head coach for four matches. Ruud will always be a Manchester United legend. We thank him for his contributions and the dedication he brought to the role. He will always be welcome at Old Trafford.”
United also announced the departure of other coaches, including Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar, and Pieter Morel. They stated that the full composition of the men’s first-team coaching staff would be revealed later.
Reflecting on his brief time in charge, Van Nistelrooy expressed his enjoyment, saying, “It’s been a short but amazing period. We were in an uncertain situation, but we did our jobs to help the club, which was important. The support from the fans and the team in tough times meant a lot. I’m grateful for the results and the connection we built.”
Amorim, 39, was appointed as United’s new manager earlier this month and arrived in the UK from Portugal after guiding Sporting Lisbon to a 4-2 win over Braga. At the Carrington training complex, he was greeted by CEO Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and technical director Jason Wilcox.
Amorim, who had a successful four-and-a-half-year spell at Sporting, is United’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. Although United are currently 13th in the Premier League, they are only four points behind the top four. Amorim’s first match in charge will be an away game against Ipswich on November 24, after the international break.
“I feel ready for the challenge,” he said after his farewell match with Sporting. “I’m aware it’s going to be very different and very tough, but I’m confident I’m ready for it.”
