Traders at Kaare Market in Tharaka Nithi Express Concerns Over Poor Sanitation.

Traders at Kaare Market in Maara, Tharaka Nithi County, are voicing their frustration over the market’s deteriorating conditions. In interviews with Citizen Digital, they expressed concerns about the significant losses they suffer during the rainy season, with poorly installed gutters leading to water leakage inside the market.

One trader explained that heavy rains during peak hours often force them to turn customers away, leaving them with no sales by the end of the day.

Beyond roofing issues, traders are also alarmed by the market’s poor sanitation. The inadequate cleaning facilities are creating serious health risks. Just two months ago, traders staged a protest against harassment by county askaris, who were demanding tax payments despite the market’s poor conditions.

Despite their efforts to raise these concerns with the relevant authorities, the traders’ attempts have yet to yield results. They are now urging the county government to take immediate action to address the market’s infrastructure and sanitation issues, ensuring a safer and more productive environment for their work.
