Thirty-five people were killed and 43 injured when a car plowed into pedestrians Monday evening in Zhuhai, a city in southern China, according to local police on Tuesday. Initially, authorities reported only injuries from the incident, while videos of the crash were removed from social media.

On Tuesday, police described the event as a “serious and vicious attack” at Zhuhai Sports Centre, raising the death toll to 35. They reported that a 62-year-old driver, surnamed Fan, drove an SUV through the centre’s gate and struck people exercising along its internal roads.

Police found Fan in his car, attempting self-harm with a knife. Officers restrained him and took him to the hospital, where he remains in a coma due to severe self-inflicted injuries. Unable to undergo interrogation, his condition is critical.
