Nestled on the edge of Nairobi National Park, Kitengela Hot Glass is home to some of the world’s finest glass products, all crafted from recycled glass using the traditional art of glassblowing. This technique involves heating glass to a specific temperature, then blowing air into it through a tube to shape it into unique forms.
Kitengela Hot Glass works with contracted collectors who gather glass waste from across the country. Once the waste arrives at the factory, it undergoes a thorough process that includes sorting, washing, and heating. According to General Manager Thomas Kapere, the glass is cleaned, then warmed for about 30 minutes before being placed in a furnace, where it is heated overnight at a temperature of 1180 degrees Celsius. “Our intermittent operational system is what makes us stand out,” Kapere explained. “From there, the glass moves through various departments where it is combined with other materials to create diverse products.”
Kitengela Hot Glass produces a wide variety of items, from bottles and vases to goblets, pitchers, and even furniture. Specializing in all things glass, the venture has earned a reputation for creating some of Kenya’s most artistic glass products, attracting attention both locally and internationally.
The factory has also become a popular tourist destination, with visitors from both Kenya and abroad coming to explore its glass museum, showcasing an array of products. Kapere emphasizes their mission to share the story of glass with the world. “Anyone who appreciates beautiful glass is our target market,” he said. “We ship our products globally, with customers from the US and UK. We also have a robust online store and a strong local market. People from outside the country often visit Kitengela Glass to see the magic in person.”
