An exam supervisor is in custody at Marsabit Police Station on suspicion of possessing Kenya’s national KCSE exam papers. Marsabit County Police Commander Leonard Kimaiyo confirmed to Radio Citizen that the arrest occurred around 4 p.m. on Monday.
According to Kimaiyo, officers from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) detained the supervisor after finding eight copies of the Kiswahili literature exam paper in his possession. Investigations are underway to determine the extent of the breach, with KNEC reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the national examination process.
In a separate incident, thirteen teachers, including nine invigilators, were arrested at Nyamninia Secondary School in Gem Yala sub-county for exam malpractice. The arrests followed the discovery of candidates with photocopied answers to Mathematics Paper 2 during the ongoing KCSE exams. Among those detained are the school’s exam supervisor, a Board of Management teacher from St. Mary’s School Yala, Nyamninia Secondary’s centre manager, and his deputy.
KNEC officials reported the incident, which occurred around 10:15 a.m. during a routine visit. They noted suspicious student behavior and, upon investigation, found photocopied answers in the possession of both a candidate and the exam supervisor, Mr. Isaac Wesonga.
Some students allegedly tried to hide or destroy the copies, suggesting an organized attempt to cheat. A multi-agency team, led by Deputy County Commissioner Evans Otieno and the sub-county director of education, responded promptly, resulting in the arrests. One invigilator reportedly managed to escape.
All suspects are being held at Yala Police Station and are expected to be arraigned in court tomorrow on charges related to the alleged exam malpractice.
