Embakasi North MP James Gakuya and Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru, popularly known as Mejja Donk, were among the prominent figures present when President William Ruto met with Nairobi County MPs.
Both Gakuya and Gathiru are strong allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and have consistently voiced their support for him. They have often appeared at his public events in the Mt. Kenya region.
While it remains unclear if political issues, including the recent impeachment proceedings against Gachagua, were discussed in the Tuesday meeting at State House, a brief statement to newsrooms noted that the president convened the gathering to discuss progress on rehabilitating the Nairobi River. The statement also mentioned that Ruto encouraged city leaders to set aside politics and concentrate on development, urging them to support projects that will transform the capital.
Principal Secretaries Raymond Omollo (Interior), Julius Korir (Water), and Nixon Korir (Lands) were also in attendance.
Speaking last Sunday, Mejja Donk reaffirmed his unwavering support for Gachagua, emphasizing that no intimidation would sway his stance. “We must remain united. During the impeachment, some advised him to resign to allow him to contest in 2027, but I urged him to stand firm,” Donk said, expressing optimism that Gachagua would receive justice in court.
On July 31, Gakuya and Donk were questioned by detectives regarding alleged involvement in anti-tax protests. Gakuya, after being released, dismissed the investigation as a “witchhunt” and called for an end to what he described as baseless accusations. “If anyone has concrete evidence or facts of any wrongdoing on our part, they should come forward and show when we allegedly financed or organized the protests,” he stated. The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has since approved charges against the two MPs.
