Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has responded to critics of his African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship bid, challenging them to face him at the ballot.
Speaking on Sunday during a thanksgiving ceremony for Governor Gladys Wanga following his appointment as the party’s national chairperson, Raila reaffirmed his commitment to serving the African continent. He outlined his vision for Africa, focusing on creating opportunities for youth and empowering people across the continent.
Raila expressed his hope for a borderless Africa, where anyone can conduct business and work freely across nations. “I am ready to serve Africa. Some oppose me, but I have said, let’s meet on the ballot. My goal is to ensure Africans can do business everywhere—make products in Kenya and sell in Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, South Africa, and beyond. As a Kenyan, you should be able to work in Morocco, Burundi, and more,” he stated.
This remark addresses recent criticism from Kenyans regarding his decision to cooperate with President William Ruto in exchange for support in his AUC chairmanship bid. Raila officially announced his candidacy and vision to transform Africa ahead of the February 2025 polls at an event held at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, last Friday.
At the event, Raila pledged to break down economic barriers, empower youth and women, and unite the continent for a shared goal of prosperity. He vowed to dismantle trade restrictions and visa requirements that have hindered growth.
Raila emphasized placing youth at the forefront of innovation and change, while empowering women and girls across sectors—technology, politics, education, and business. He underscored his commitment to ensuring that women’s and girls’ voices are heard in decision-making, building a more balanced and equitable society.
