João Pereira will replace Ruben Amorim as head coach of Sporting Lisbon, the Portuguese champions confirmed on Monday. The 40-year-old, who was previously the reserve-team coach, will take over after Amorim’s departure to Manchester United.
In Amorim’s final match in charge, Sporting mounted a stunning comeback to win 4-2 at Braga on Sunday, preserving their perfect record in the Primeira Liga this season.
Pereira, a former Portugal right-back with three stints at Sporting as a player, will hold his first press conference as head coach later on Monday, according to the club’s social media.
Amorim left for Manchester United after a successful tenure in Lisbon, which included leading Sporting to their first league title in 19 years in 2021 and reclaiming the title last season. Under his leadership, they also currently sit second in the Champions League, following a 4-1 victory over Manchester City last week in his final home game.
