Raila Odinga has declared that he will not step away from active Kenyan politics as he pursues the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship.
Speaking at Ligisa Secondary School in Rangee Constituency during a thanksgiving ceremony for Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Chairperson Gladys Wanga, Odinga affirmed that vying for the AUC role should not suggest his withdrawal from Kenyan politics.
“I’m not leaving without coming back. I’m still here,” he emphasized. Odinga also reassured that ODM, now under the stewardship of Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, will continue advocating for democracy across Kenya.
Confident in his bid for the AUC seat, Odinga gave no indication of an impending exit from Kenyan politics. National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed warned ODM members against pushing succession plans prematurely, stating that the party would take action against politicians promoting such agendas. ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga urged respect for Odinga’s position and expressed hope for strengthening the party as he takes on new responsibilities.
Governor Nyong’o called on ODM officials to focus on member registration efforts, preparing the party for its grassroots elections scheduled for November 27. These elections will begin at polling stations, moving to ward, constituency, county, and national levels to establish new leadership within ODM.
