Five Killed as Gunmen Open Fire on Police Officers

A National Police Reservist (NPR) was injured over the weekend, and three civilians lost their lives in cattle rustling attacks in Isiolo County, located in northeastern Kenya.

On Sunday, the National Police Service reported that three more people were severely injured after an unknown number of suspected bandits, armed with assault rifles, stormed the Bojidare area in Isiolo County.

The attackers targeted local settlements, firing shots and seizing over 250 cows and 300 goats from residents.

In response, officers from the National Police Service (NPS), including Kenya Police, Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), and National Police Reserve (NPR) personnel, swiftly tracked down the attackers and managed to recover all 300 goats and 30 cows.

The injured victims were taken to Isiolo District Hospital for specialized treatment, while the deceased were returned to their families for burial in accordance with Muslim customs.

In a separate incident in the Hola Bule area, another group of armed bandits raided a home, opened fire, and stole 19 cattle. NPS and NPR officers responding to the scene found that one man had been fatally shot, while two others, including an NPR officer, sustained gunshot injuries. All 19 stolen animals were later recovered, and the victim’s body was taken to the Isiolo County Hospital morgue.

During a third cattle rustling incident, two bandits were fatally shot near the River Waso area in Samburu East. NPS officers successfully led an operation to recover 211 stolen cattle.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Administration Police Service, Gilbert Masengeli, along with the Eastern Regional Security team, arrived in Isiolo on Sunday morning to assess the security situation and coordinate operations in the area to restore peace and order.

Reinforcement teams from Isiolo Police Station, ASTU, and NPR have been deployed, while the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations to hold the perpetrators accountable.
