Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has warned Kenyans who recently interviewed for Qatari state jobs to be vigilant against conmen.
In a Sunday update on his X handle on November 10, 2024, the CS clarified that successful candidates will be contacted by phone call, not SMS.
“Successful candidates from the Qatar interviews will receive a phone call, not an SMS. Appointment letters will only be available for collection at KICC,” he stated.
Mutua’s statement follows a viral text message falsely inviting candidates to report in person to sign job offer letters for Qatari positions. He identified the message as a scam, urging Kenyans to beware of fraudsters targeting hopeful applicants. He added that security agencies are actively pursuing those responsible for circulating the fake message.
“This alert is a reminder to the public to rely solely on official government communication to avoid falling victim to scams,” he emphasized.
Mutua’s remarks come weeks after thousands of Kenyans attended Qatari job interviews at KICC and Kabete National Polytechnic. The recruitment initiative, part of a Memorandum of Understanding between Kenya and Qatar, aims to expand job opportunities for Kenyans in healthcare, ICT, education, and construction, targeting an increase from 67,000 Kenyan workers in Qatar to between 200,000 and 300,000.
The program aligns with President Ruto’s strategy to bolster the Kenyan economy through diaspora remittances and international employment opportunities.
