Uasin Gishu County Police Commander, Benjamin Mwanji, confirmed that the tragic incident occurred at a house in Kipkaren Estate on the outskirts of the city. Mwanji explained that a 16-year-old boy had visited a neighbor’s house, where he and a 12-year-old were playing with toys. However, a disagreement ensued between the two.
“The 12-year-old suddenly ran to the kitchen, returned with a knife, and used it to stab his friend in the chest,” Mwanji said.
At the time, there were no adults present, but the victim’s cries attracted the attention of neighbors. The severely injured boy, who was bleeding, was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.
Mwanji confirmed that the boy who attacked his friend, along with his parents, is cooperating with the police in the investigation. “We are looking into this unfortunate incident, and we urge parents to be vigilant with their children during the holiday season,” he added.
He emphasized the importance of parents ensuring their children play in safe environments, free from harmful objects. The incident left the residents of Kipkaren Estate in shock, and police faced challenges controlling the crowd at the scene. Authorities recovered a knife suspected to have been used in the attack.
Both boys were Grade 5 students at a local school. Mwanji reiterated the need for parents to take greater responsibility for their children now that schools are closed for the December holidays. “We are seeing many cases where parents are neglecting their children, which can lead to such incidents,” he said.
Bishop David Kimani, a resident of Kipkaren Estate, also urged parents to limit their children’s exposure to violent content, which they may copy and replicate in real life.
