Forty-three monkeys escaped from a South Carolina medical research facility on Wednesday, though local police assured the public there’s “almost no danger.”
“These monkeys are completely disease-free. They’re harmless, though a bit skittish,” Yemassee Police Chief Gregory Alexander explained Thursday morning.
The escape happened at the Alpha Genesis research facility after a new employee accidentally left an enclosure open, Alexander reported. The runaway primates are Rhesus macaques, all young females weighing about 7 pounds (3 kilograms), and have not yet been used in any testing, according to the police.
In a statement issued midday Thursday, authorities noted that Alpha Genesis staff “have eyes on the primates and are trying to lure them back with food.”
While the facility typically manages escapes on-site, this time the monkeys made it out of the compound, which is located about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from downtown Yemassee, Alexander added.
