Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa have suggested a possible departure from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya alliance to form a new political coalition.
Speaking at an event in Kitale, the leaders indicated that the new alliance would provide an alternative form of leadership for Kenyans. Kalonzo noted that they are in the process of extensive consultations.
“A good idea often leads to a better one. What we are contemplating is a better idea. We are forward-looking and highly consultative,” Kalonzo stated.
He also advised the media not to dismiss Azimio prematurely, hinting that the coalition could be integrated into the new formation.
“I urge the media not to consider Azimio buried before its time. If a new outfit is established, Azimio might even be a part of it,” he added.
Eugene Wamalwa mentioned that the new political vehicle could be launched as early as next year. The former Defense Cabinet Secretary expressed confidence that this new formation would be key to combating corruption in the country.
“With the New Year just around the corner, there are new developments on the horizon, and I am convinced we will see a new coalition and potentially a new government. This team will be the one to rescue Kenya from corruption,” said Wamalwa.
Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, who was also present, indicated that this new political outfit would serve as their platform for the 2027 presidential election, with Kalonzo Musyoka as their chosen candidate.
“We are part of this coalition led by Kalonzo Musyoka. He will be our president in 2027,” said Waititu.
The leaders spoke during a memorial event for Kenya’s eighth Vice President, the late Michael Kijana Wamalwa, in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County. This announcement follows the July 2024 departure of the Martha Karua-led Narc Kenya party from the Azimio coalition. DAP-K has also declared its exit from the alliance, joining other member parties that left after Azimio’s election loss.
