Renowned Kenyan rapper Juliani has shared the humorous reason behind his habit of sending Sh100 to the late Bob Collymore, the former CEO of Safaricom. During his appearance on Engage Talk, Juliani explained that he wanted to remind Bob that he was the boss.
“I’m the only person who would send Bob Colly more cash on Mpesa,” Juliani said. “It wasn’t a lot; it was just random Sh100. It was to remind him that I am the boss.”
Juliani also reflected on an important lesson he learned about trust. He recounted how Bob occasionally invited him to boardroom meetings, where he, a guy from the ghetto, would simply listen. “Trust is given, not earned. I didn’t have to prove anything; they just trusted me. Trust yourself, and when you do trust, don’t attach an outcome to it, or you’ll end up disappointed.”
Bob Collymore passed away from cancer on July 1, 2019, at the age of 61. His death was confirmed by Safaricom in a statement. In October 2017, he traveled to the UK for treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and returned in July 2018 to resume his duties. He had been receiving treatment for this condition in various hospitals, most recently at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. His health deteriorated in the weeks leading up to his passing at home in the early hours of July 1, 2019. Bob Collymore is survived by his wife and four children.
Juliani and Bob Collymore were not only friends but also collaborated on several projects together.
