The U.S. Embassy has launched the American Corner Mtaani at the Kenya National Library Service (KNLS), marking the sixth addition to the network of American Corners across Kenya. This new center joins existing locations in Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, and Lamu.
According to the Embassy, the American Corner Mtaani is designed to be a hub that fosters innovation and collaboration, especially among young Kenyan entrepreneurs and start-ups. During the launch event, Ambassador Meg Whitman emphasized that the expansion aligns with a commitment to strengthen people-to-people partnerships, which was highlighted during Kenya’s State Visit to the White House in May.
“American Corner Mtaani is here to support Kenya’s young people in bringing their innovation to life,” Ambassador Whitman stated. “Let’s open the doors and enable the greatest minds to elevate the Silicon Savannah. This space is a greenhouse for creativity, learning, and dialogue.”
Shakaria Buckson, the Embassy’s regional public engagement specialist overseeing American Corners in East Africa, pointed out the center’s inclusivity, serving people from all walks of life. “We aim to meet individuals where they are and offer resources and training that help them move closer to their career goals and aspirations,” she noted. “I believe that many of America’s most influential innovators, artists, and change-makers emerged not from elite institutions, but from grassroots opportunities to explore and learn. American Corner Mtaani embodies that same vision for Kenyans.”
The American Corner Mtaani will provide the local community with access to various U.S. resources, including digital databases, expert speakers, and educational materials. It will also host programs focused on entrepreneurship, leadership, technology, cultural exchanges, and the creative economy.
Charles Nvizo, CEO of KNLS, expressed that the partnership underscores the shared belief in equitable access to quality education. “American Corner Mtaani is concrete proof of our nation’s dedication to supporting its citizens,” he said.
The center operates from Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm, and is closed on Kenyan holidays.
