The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is scheduled to conduct its grassroots elections on November 20, 2024, across all polling units in 47 counties.
The National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC), which oversees the party’s election processes, announced the new election date following a prior postponement caused by widespread flooding in April.
Established under Article 61 of the Party Constitution, the NECC is tasked with planning, organizing, and conducting ODM’s elections.
These elections aim to fill crucial roles across various committees, ensuring fair representation within the party’s structure. Each polling unit will elect leaders for three main committees: the Mainstream, the Women’s League, and the Youth League. In the Mainstream category, several positions are available, including Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Organizing Secretary, Treasurer, Women Leader, Youth Leader, and three Committee Members.
For the Women’s and Youth League categories, positions will include Chairperson, Secretary, Organizing Secretary, and three committee members each.
Highlighting the importance of inclusivity, the NECC stated that “persons with disabilities and minorities will be integrated into these categories.”
ODM has mandated that elections be conducted through consensus or by a show of hands, allowing flexibility for party members in selecting their representatives. Voting is set to occur from 10 AM to 4 PM on the designated day. The NECC has encouraged members to familiarize themselves with the guidelines for grassroots elections in preparation.
The NECC Chairperson emphasized the collaborative role of County Election Coordinators, who will work closely with polling units to ensure the elections run smoothly.
Party members are also reminded to verify their membership details using the dedicated USSD code 483036#. The committee reassured members that the sub-branch, Branch, and County Coordinating Committee structures and memberships will remain unchanged.
Further details regarding the rollout will be provided after the completion of polling unit elections.
ODM urges its members to engage actively and stay informed, adding, “To ensure a credible process, we encourage our party members to continuously communicate with the National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) for any clarifications.”
