President William Ruto has outlined his reasons for choosing Kithure Kindiki as his deputy following weeks of silence amid the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua. During Kindiki’s swearing-in at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), President Ruto highlighted Kindiki’s exemplary professionalism in his roles as Interior CS, former Tharaka Nithi Senator, and Senate Majority Leader.
Ruto emphasized that Kindiki’s leadership abilities will be essential in supporting the implementation of the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). “In each of these roles, he has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication, high competence, and professionalism, delivering results beyond expectations,” the president remarked.
Calling Kindiki “a highly qualified scholar” with a career marked by “exemplary achievement,” Ruto noted that his new deputy embodies a vision for positive change and a commitment to high standards of public service.
The president stressed that the Deputy Presidency should unite all Kenyans rather than favor individual interests, an apparent critique of Gachagua, who had often advocated strongly for the Mt Kenya region. “In this phase of implementing our Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda, the nation requires a patriotic public servant and a dedicated advocate of our constitutional values,” Ruto explained.
He continued, “Kindiki has assured me he’s ready to serve, not for personal or regional gains, but for the people of Kenya.”
Ruto urged his new deputy to fulfill his role impartially. “Serve without bias or fear so Kenyans can truly feel they are one people, one nation,” he said. “This moment demands someone committed to excellence, humble enough to serve loyally, and experienced enough to mobilize government efforts across all sectors for the nation’s good.”
This is Ruto’s first public statement on his selection of Kindiki as Deputy President, clearly setting him apart from his former deputy, Gachagua. Kindiki now becomes Kenya’s third Deputy President since the 2010 Constitution.
