Tension has remained high at Toi Market in Kibra sub-county since Wednesday morning due to a disputed market election.
The market is divided into two factions, with one side claiming the election is being conducted illegally. Supporters of the election argue that it is overdue and part of necessary measures to address recurring fire incidents in the market. Led by presiding officer Joseph Owino, they say their newly established market constitution allows the election to restore order under the current contested leadership.
“Market elections were scheduled for last year, but other groups have been making excuses to delay them,” Mr. Owino stated.
The voting, currently taking place at the Toi Mosque, has sparked concerns from some members about the venue’s neutrality. Owino explained, “We chose this location as it’s spacious, providing access for pregnant women and those unwell who cannot fit in the crowded market.”
Kibra sub-county commissioner Abas Mohamed has labeled the election as illegal, noting that it lacks approval from the Nairobi County government.
Interestingly, the election is being overseen by police officers led by Kibra OCS Ibrahim Ahmed. Opponents have vowed to reject the outcome, alleging that the process could lead to ethnic divisions among traders.
