The Employment and Labour Relations Court has ruled the ongoing lecturers’ strike as unprotected and has called on union officials to return to the negotiation table.
Members of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) went on strike on Tuesday, pressing the government to fulfill obligations outlined in the 2012-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The court has urged lecturers to re-engage in negotiations with the government, aiming to establish a mutually agreeable Return-To-Work formula. UASU and other involved parties have been given 14 days to submit a response on the issue.
The case is set for mention on November 28, 2024.
Classes in all public universities have now been suspended for more than 24 hours, with lecturers insisting they will not resume work until their demands, including outstanding payments, are met. UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga emphasized the call for the government to uphold the agreed return-to-work formula, which includes essential benefits for staff welfare.
