Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has voiced concern over the recruitment of Kenyans by an undisclosed Qatari company, questioning the government’s stance on sending local talent abroad. Speaking on the Daybreak show, Wamuchomba criticized the practice of sending educated Kenyans to perform menial jobs overseas, urging instead for the creation of opportunities locally.
She highlighted the need for systemic changes to address job scarcity, stating, “We have failed Kenyans as a government if our solution for thousands of unemployed people is to send them abroad for menial jobs. These are educated people, and they deserve better.”
Wamuchomba also raised concerns about youth grooming and presentation during job interviews. “I am particular about appearance when hiring. For formal positions, the first impression matters significantly,” she explained, adding that informal roles might allow more flexibility.
She advised parents to emphasize grooming skills for their children, stressing that professional appearance is often a requirement. “If you’re going for an interview, trim your beard, consider the style if necessary, because jeans and dreadlocks may not be suitable for every job.”
This statement follows Labour CS Alfred Mutua’s announcement that a major Qatari company is seeking 8,000 Kenyans to fill roles including nursing, waitressing, child care, driving, plumbing, painting, and welding. Over 15,000 hopeful Kenyans gathered at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) to compete for the positions, far exceeding the available slots.
