On Monday, the Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare warned CSs Wycliffe Oparanya and John Mbadi for failing to attend a meeting on securing Ksh204 million in unpaid dues for retired KCC employees. The committee criticized the “casual” handling of this decades-old issue, which poses new hurdles for elderly petitioners seeking their dues.
Senator Miraj Abdullahi suggested that both CSs cover travel expenses incurred by petitioners, while Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi proposed fines up to Ksh500,000 and possible arrests if they skip future summons. Mbadi recommended dismissing the petition, arguing the government isn’t responsible for unpaid dues KCC deducted but didn’t remit. Oparanya, meanwhile, sent a representative instead of attending.
Senator George Mbugua condemned the CSs’ disregard for the process, pledging unwavering support for the petitioners, with other committee members echoing this commitment.
