A trainee Catholic nun who had been reported missing from Rongo Catholic Church on Thursday, October 24, was tragically found dead in a sewer pit within the sister convent of Rongo Parish.
Homa Bay Diocese Vicar General, Gabriel Atieno, reported that the 23-year-old’s body was discovered floating in the pit on Sunday, October 27, by a fellow nun on her way to the farm. Following her disappearance, the convent’s sisters had initially notified the Rongo Police Station after a day-long search yielded no results.
Father Atieno noted that they have yet to determine the circumstances leading to Yvonne Jirangwa’s untimely death. Jirangwa, who had been in Rongo Parish for three years, was well-known for her active involvement in community service, and her passing is a deep loss to both her family and the church.
The church is now collaborating closely with police authorities to investigate the incident. Rongo Sub-County Police Commander, Salim Fundi, confirmed the church’s report of the trainee sister’s disappearance and stated that efforts to locate her were ongoing before her body was found. Her remains have been moved to Rosewood Hospital mortuary for an autopsy and further police investigation.
