Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has shed light on why he chose to stay silent amid the widespread protests by Gen Zs across Nairobi and the rest of Kenya.
In a statement on Friday, Sakaja explained that his silence was a deliberate choice to fully understand the concerns and demands of the youth. “I chose to remain silent because, as a leader, it’s important to listen. There is dignity in silence and in listening,” he said.
Through his period of silence, Sakaja noted he was able to discern key issues that Kenyan youths are passionate about. Foremost among these is their desire to be actively involved in decision-making and the nation’s development. Additionally, they are calling for radical transparency in governance, seeking clarity on project investments, revenue collection, and expenditures. “They want to know how much is invested, how much revenue is collected, and how funds are spent. Providing radical transparency helps them understand,” Sakaja added.
He also highlighted that the youth are keen to see an end to tribalism in the country and stressed the importance of listening to their voices. Sakaja cautioned that the current calm should not be mistaken for permanent peace, emphasizing that radical reforms are necessary to address the underlying discontent. “Calm does not equate to peace, and peace is not simply the absence of agitation. There is still something unresolved in their hearts. Unless we implement radical changes across all institutions of authority, the potential for renewed agitation remains,” he warned.
Nairobi, particularly its central business districts, experienced severe disruptions during the Gen Z protests, including property damage, theft, and loss of lives.
