Tottenham’s Malian midfielder, Yves Bissouma, will miss the start of the Premier League season due to a suspension imposed by the club. This follows an investigation into footage that showed him inhaling nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, which is classified as a Class C drug in the UK.
Last weekend, Bissouma shared clips on Snapchat where he was seen using the substance. In response, he has apologized and acknowledged his “serious lack of judgment.”
As a result of the investigation, Bissouma has been handed a one-match suspension, meaning he will not play in Tottenham’s Premier League opener against Leicester on Monday.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou commented on the situation, stating, “He is a footballer of this club – he has responsibilities to the club, his team-mates, our supporters, everyone associated with the club, and he has failed in his duties.” Postecoglou added that beyond missing the match, Bissouma will need to work on rebuilding trust with both the coach and his teammates.
Nitrous oxide is used medically as an anesthetic and painkiller, but recreational use can lead to harmful effects, including brain and nerve damage.
Postecoglou emphasized that the sanctions against Bissouma should include an educational component to help him understand the seriousness of his actions and prevent similar behavior in the future. He stated, “There is one person involved in this case, and it’s Biss who made a very bad decision. We want to understand that and help him as a club to ensure he doesn’t make such choices again.”
Bissouma, who joined Tottenham from Brighton in 2022, started 26 matches under Postecoglou during the 2023-24 season.
